Current Music Curriculum 

​INTRODUCTION TO GUITAR   

Throughout the course of the trimester, we will cover a variety of techniques that are designed to help students begin the process of learning the guitar.  This course caters to all levels of abilities. If you are intimidated by the instrument, feel that you are to advanced for the course, or somewhere in between, this is the course for you!

 

Students will have access to a new guitar provided by the MVHS Music Dept. however, there are a limited number of available instruments, and an equipment use form must be completed.

This course requires students to engage in physical practice as well as written material and lectures.

​AUDIO ENGINEERING

Coursework:

The MVHS Audio Engineering program is offered to high achieving students and functions like that of an Advanced Placement course. The MVHS Music Department is a Certified AVID Pro Tools 101 and 110 training center, and through and articulation agreement between Husson University (New England School of Communications) and AVID, qualified students will receive *Certified Pro Tools Operator Status* and college credit.

Training Facility:

The MVHS Band Room is equipped with the latest version of Pro Tools and numerous plug-ins that function in a Mac-based environment. In addition, audio interfaces are provided as well as a reference monitoring system that allows students to train in input, output, and MIDI signal chains. This is all placed in a comfortable setting that encourages students to work long hours honing their skills and completing course work.

Control Room:

The acoustically treated control room allows students to work in a 5.1 surround listening environment. Not only does the room contain a variety of outboard equipment, but it is equipped with digital and analog instruments for recording a variety of situations. The DAW consists of the latest Pro Tools software that mirror the training center. Audio input is directed into a MIDAS M32 mixer that is interfaced with a Slate Audio Raven MTi multi-touch control surface. Together, students have access to train on some of the latest equipment available and help prepare them for a professional environment.

These facilities have been made possible with the assistance of the RSU 10 administration, Husson University (NESCom Department) with funding assistance from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation and the Perloff Family Foundation.

​MUSIC HISTORY AND CRITICAL LISTENING

Music History and Critical Listening will focus on a variety of musical concepts including Acoustics, Digital Format,Industry Practices, and Music History focusing on many genres through various eras. Come find your new favorite artist and join in the discussion of Everything Music!

 

 

 

 

 

​PERCUSSION CLASS

Percussion Class provides students with the opportunity to learn the mechanics and fundamentals of percussion instruments with primary focus on snare, drumset and performance cadences.  Like that of other courses, students will also gain a working knowledge of equipment function, set-up and maintenance.

 

This course requires students to engage in physical practice as well as written material and lectures.

​HIGH SCHOOL BAND

New Band participants must pass a "basic skills" audition before enrolling in the course, but if you are willing to commit and participate, you are welcome!  

 

Throughout the year we will explore a variety of material, work with a number of ensembles, and perform.  In addition, students will be required to participate in community events, concert performances, and Pep Band activities.  

Selected performances will be MANDATORY for ALL Participants.

​HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS

Chorus is a very eclectic vocal group that performs a variety of musical genres with a variety of ensembles. Members must display a high level of commitment and be willing to put forth a group effort.

 

Prepared and committed students will have the opportunity to perform in a select group that travels and participates in a variety of events throughout the state.  

Selected performances will be MANDATORY for ALL Participants.

​MUSIC THEORY

Music Theory concentrates on the written and theoretical elements of music as well as musical form, composition, and application.  This is a "must have" course for any student wishing to pursue music beyond a beginner level.

INTRODUCTION TO KEYBOARDING

Introduction to Keyboarding (or "Piano Class" if you wish) is designed to establish a working understanding of the keyboard as well as notation practices.  Although this is geared toward the beginner, intermediate and advanced students are encouraged to participate.  If you feel that you have nothing to learn from this course, I would invite you to listen to Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto in A minor:  He composed this at the age of 13! 

 

*Disclaimer*  I cannot teach you to play this, but we will explore the mechanics of the instrument, trade ideas, and as a class, say "WOW" together.
